What’s Sin Got To Do With It?

When the Soviet Union collapsed many years ago and Boris Yeltsin came to power, he was interviewed by a major U.S. television network.   The lady who interviewed him asked him if he believed in God and he said he did.   The interviewer then asked if he believed in heaven and he said yes.   She then asked him if thought he was would be in heaven and he said “No”.   She asked him “Why” and he replied that he was a sinful man.   The interviewer then stated, “What’s sin got to do with it”?

It makes a person wonder how many people do not realize this simple teaching of the Bible.   Sin not only has to do with it, it has everything to do with it.   Isaiah the Prophet said in Is. 59:1-2 that your sins have caused God to turn his face from you and your iniquities (another word for sin) have separated you from God.   1 John 3:4 says that lawlessness and sin are the same thing.   So more specifically, what is sin?   It is talked about throughout the Bible, but 1 Cor. 6:9-11 and Galatians 5:19-show many sins by name.   Things like murder, stealing, lying, cheating, coveting what someone has and harming others either physically or by gossiping about them, drunkenness’s, outburst of anger, immorality are all sin.  James 4: 17 sums it up best of all.   It says if you know the right thing to do and don’t do it, it is sin.   Wow, that's pretty clear.   You know, all of us are sinners, each person on this planet.   Now most people try to live the best moral life they can, and that is a wonderful thing, everyone should, but we cannot go through life and not commit sin.   We tell fibs (many times just to protect someone we care about), gossip, get mad when we shouldn’t, wish we had as much as someone else has and lots of other things.   It is tough to live 70-80+ years and not sin, in fact, it is impossible.   So how do we deal with this?   The answer is that God has dealt with it for you and all you have to do is accept what God has done and obey his commandments about salvation.

John 3:16 says that God loved us so much, that He sent his Son to save us.   In John 1:29 when John the Baptist saw Jesus walking he told those around him, there is the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.   Romans 5:8 says that God demonstrated his love for us, that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.   God sent his own Son to save us through his death on the cross.   So how do we get rid of sin?   Jesus told his disciples in both Mathew 28 and Mark 16 at his ascension into heaven to go and make disciples by baptizing them.  The Apostle Peter told the crowd in Acts 2:38 when they asked what to do, to repent (change the direction you are going) and be baptized for the forgiveness of sin.    The Apostle Paul telling of his own conversion in Acts 22:16 said that he was told to be baptized and wash away his sins.  (Baptism is by immersion only)

There are many other examples.   There is your answer, pretty simple, repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins.  Oh yeah, one other thing.  In Revelation 2:10, Jesus said to be faithful until death and he would give you the crown of life.   Now that is pretty clear and the truth straight from God.   You don’t have to guess or wonder about our salvation, God doesn’t deal with guess work; you simply follow what God teaches in the Bible.   That’s why he gave the Bible to us.
