What Are You Looking For?

This is a story about a man named Fred who lived in a part of the country that was known for severe flash flooding.   One evening, while watching TV he noticed that a wind had suddenly come up.   The wind began to get stronger and a weather alert came on telling the residents in his area to evacuate, a flash flood was imminent.    Fred, being a religious man, began to pray that God would deliver him from this peril.   About then the Sheriff knocked on his door and told him to come with him and to hurry.   Fred argued and refused to go, saying he trusted God to save him.   The Sheriff, having many to evacuate left.   The flood waters begin to rise and started coming into the house.   Soon, they forced Fred to the second floor, where he continued to pray that God would deliver him.   Suddenly there was a light and banging on a window and there were two men in a boat.   Fred opened the window, but refused to go, saying he trusted God to save him and soon the water raised the boat to where they could not reach Fred.   The rising water then forced Fred to the attic and then onto the roof through a skylight.   Sitting at the very pinnacle of his roof, Fred continued to pray.  He heard a helicopter and it hovered over him.   They lowered a rope ladder, but Fred refused to climb up saying he trusted God to save him.   The winds became to strong and they were forced to leave.  Fred was swept away and drowned.  In Paradise, he saw Jesus and asked him, I prayed and prayed and you let me drown anyway.   Jesus then said, “Can I ask you something”?    Fred said “Sure”.   The first time you prayed, I sent the Sheriff, the second time you prayed, I sent the men in the boat and the third time you prayed, I sent the helicopter.   Now tell me Fred, exactly what was it that you were looking for?

Through the years I have talked to people who have a lot of difficult issues in their lives, as we all do from time to time.  In listening to them, many of the things they wanted are exactly what Christianity offers.   When I brought up Christianity, there was many times an immediate reaction against it.    “I don’t want to talk about religion or that stuff” was the response.   It makes you wonder how many people go on looking for peace in their life, while turning their backs on the one thing that will bring them peace.   Now, I don’t want to mislead you in any way.   Christians suffer in all respects like non-Christians do, we lose jobs due to the economy, struggle financially, get sick, our kids or family get sick, we die from diseases like cancer and so forth.   No, those kinds of issues will not go away.   However, Christianity does things for you that nothing else can.

I once heard an Atheist say that if the world would follow the teachings of the New Testament, most of the world’s problems would disappear.   I find it interesting that he sees the power of Christianity and yet not recognize nor acknowledge the source of it.   God created us with a free will choice to make decisions about matters that affect us.   There is an old expression that goes like this:   “Most of life’s wounds are self-inflicted”, and with a few exceptions, this is true.   As we go through life, we make decisions that affect not us only, but those close to us.   Hopefully you have made a lot more good than bad, and as you matured, the good outweigh the bad.   There are so many passages in the Bible that reflect upon this, it is hard to choose, but the following may help.

54 He also said to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, 'A shower is coming.' And so it happens. 55 And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, 'There will be scorching heat,' and it happens. 56 You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?   Luke 12:54-56

Fred looked at the three different sets of rescuers sent to him and did not recognize that God had answered his prayers, not once but three times.   He could see everything around him, but not the signs and made a bad choice.   Now Fred’s is an easy situation to see and it seems funny that a person would turn away help three times.   Let me ask you this.   How many times have you taken a quite walk in the woods or forest and saw all of nature around you come alive, teeming with all the creatures God has created.  How many times have you felt the wind in your face and did not know where it came from.  Have you ever stood on an Ocean bluff and watched the majestic power of the Ocean crashing onto the rocks?   How many times have you looked up at the beautiful blue sky with large white fluffy clouds and not see the one who gave them to you?   You don’t have to go out into nature to see God.   God is all around you in so many ways.   Did you ever think about God and then a friend or co-worker mentions how wonderful God is in their life?   Did you interpret that correctly or was your answer; “I don’t want to hear any of that God stuff”.   Maybe that person started talking to you about God for a reason.   Did you ever think that maybe God sent that person to you?    The following is quite possibly the most famous verse in the bible:

16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.   John 3:16

God loves you so much, he sent his only Son to save you.   Did you miss that too?   You don’t have to, that is a free will choice.   God offers you salvation, it is up to you to recognize that and accept God on his terms.    Come; make a great choice and join us on our journey to heaven.
