The Church of Burger King

Do you remember the song or jingle that Burger King used in their commercials called Have it your Way.   The words went like this:

“Hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, special orders don’t upset us; all we ask is that you let us serve it your way.  Have it your way, have it your way. Burger King.”

Now if you are in the restaurant business that would be fine.   Of course you want to have it your way, not all of us like our food prepared the same way.   However, in the church it is not the same thing, but too many people want Christianity on their terms and not God’s terms and many churches out there today are very accommodating, serving it the way people want it.   The Apostle Paul, through divine inspiration foretold this was coming in 2 Timothy 4:1-4:

1 I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

We see this all over today, people seeking out churches that do not endure sound doctrine and tell people what they want to hear, not the truth of the scriptures.  Paul said they will turn away from the truth and aside to myths, that is, false teaching.   Paul also gave a similar warning to the church in Galatia in Galatians 1:6-9.

6 I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed ! 9 As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed !

Paul was amazed back then how quickly people were abandoning the truth and were going for a different version of the gospel, one not given by the Apostles who were working under the direct operation of the Holy Spirit and speaking from and for God.    Jesus taught by words and deeds that our will must be submitted to God’s will.   Look at what he says in the Sermon on the Mount Matthew 7:21-23:

21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. 22 "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles ?' 23 "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

Jesus talks about doing the will of his Father and that ONLY those who do that will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.   In verse 22 he talks about people who say 'Lord, Lord,…’   Ask yourself this question:   Who are these people saying this?   Are they the folks who never go to church, are they atheists or are they folks who go to church all the time and yet refuse to follow scripture?   Jesus clarifies who they are if you continue reading.   They are religious people who are pleading their case with Jesus that they have done many great things in His name yet Jesus will tell them to DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

Jesus also gives us an example of obeying God’s will in the Garden of Gethsemane when he knew he was going to the cross.   In Matthew 26:39 these words are recorded in a prayer to the Father:

39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will."

He asked that the cross be taken from him, but yet submitted to God’s will.   Even to death Jesus submitted as an example for us to follow.   That is how important obeying God’s will is.   There are many more passages and examples of obedience to God’s word and will, but these are very clear commandments and examples.

Yes, you can find all types of churches that will give you religion your way, let you say and do what you want to do, just as the Apostle Paul through the Holy Spirit warned it was coming.   I will leave you with the words of Jesus from Luke 6:46:

46 "Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

The question Jesus asked in this verse is rhetorical.   Please come and join us on our journey to heaven.
